This privacy policy explains how Alissa Birkel and Birkel Creative, LLC ("I," "me," "we," "us") collect, use, and protect information when you visit alissabirkel.net or shop at Layered Magic / the Layered Magic shop (the "Site"). I take your privacy seriously and only collect what I actually need to run this small business.

What I collect
When you visit the Site, my hosting provider (Squarespace) automatically collects standard technical information including your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you view, and the site that referred you. This is used for basic analytics and security.
When you contact me through the "Write Me a Note" form, I collect your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
When you buy something from the Layered Magic shop / Layered Magic, I collect your name, billing and shipping addresses, email address, and order details. Payment information (credit card numbers, etc.) is processed by Squarespace's payment processor and I never see or store it.
When you make a one-time tip or set up a recurring pledge through the Tip Jar, the payment processor (currently through Squarespace) handles your payment information. I receive a record of the transaction including your name and email.
If you sign up for any email list or newsletter, I collect your email address and any other information you voluntarily provide. But I don’t have a newsletter because no one will read it.
Cookies
The Site uses cookies — small data files stored in your browser — to keep the site working properly, remember your preferences, and track basic analytics. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though some parts of the Site may not work correctly if you do.
How I use what I collect
I use the information you give me to:
Respond to your messages and inquiries
Fulfill and ship your orders
Process payments and donations
Send you order confirmations and shipping updates
Send you emails you've signed up for (and only those)
Improve how the Site works
Meet legal and tax obligations
I do not sell your information. I do not share it with third parties for their marketing purposes. I share it only with the service providers I need to run the business (Squarespace, payment processors, shipping carriers, email service providers) and only as needed to do their jobs.
How long I keep it
I keep information as long as I need it for the purposes described above, or as required by law (tax records, for example, I keep for seven years). If you ask me to delete your information, I will, unless I'm required to keep it for a legal reason.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have specific rights regarding your personal information, including the right to access what I have about you, correct it, delete it, or opt out of certain uses. To exercise any of these rights, write me a note at alissa.birkel@gmail.com.
If you're in the European Union or United Kingdom, you have additional rights under GDPR, including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
If you're in California, you have specific rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know what personal information I've collected about you and the right to request deletion.
Children
The Site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through the Site, please write to me and I'll delete it.
Security
I take reasonable steps to protect your information, including using Squarespace's encrypted hosting and payment processing. No system is perfectly secure, so I can't guarantee absolute security, but I work to keep your information safe.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy from time to time. When I do, I'll update the "last updated" date at the top. Significant changes will be noted on the Site.
